by Darko Johnson

I did a bit of research on the top 500 most visited websites according to Alexa and came with some very interesting results below.

Did you know that…

cracked

is owned by:

demand media

which is a company that also owns:

  • eHow.com (145th most popular website)
  • LiveStrong.com (2730th most popular website)

and also:

demand_media_sites

For a full list of websites Demand Media owns, see this link.

Did you also know that…

college-humor

is owned by:

iac

which is a company that also owns:

  • Ask.com (56th most popular website)
  • Match.com (411th most popular website)

and also:

iac-sites

All of the above sites are incredibly popular. See this Wikipedia page for a full list of sites IAC owns.

What about this company?

cbs

They own:

cbs-sites

You can find the full list on the CBS Interactive website.

These are the major examples of very big companies that own several popular websites. Here are some also very interesting examples:

Company name: Expedia inc

Sites owned:

  • Expedia.com
  • Hotels.com
  • TripAdvisor.com

Company name: Gawker Media (Gawker Media sites have similar templates so some of you might already know there’s a same company behind them.)

Sites owned:

  • Gizmodo.com
  • LifeHacker.com

Company name: IGN Entertainment

Sites owned:

  • GameSpy.com
  • AskMen.com
  • GameStats.com

It was quite interesting to discover all of the info above because it isn’t instantly obvious who owns what. Hope you enjoyed the discovery process as I did :)
